so i have not written a journal entry in a long time.
and when i first got to deviant art, i thought journal entries were more for letting watchers know what's going on...this was when i was 15...now i am 20.
i have been on this site for a very long time...i have done a lot of growing as an artist through this site, and i intend to stay on it...

however,

journals, especially on this site, are important. it's where you go and reference back to thoughts about the past...and they happens to be public to people who watch your art.
i am the kind of person that likes to teach people things. i like to teach others lessons i learned that caught me off guard because nobody told me to expect somethings.

so here are some things that i have learned.
i go to an art school
Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts.
i wanted to be in communications arts, or illustration, but after my Art Foundation year and after i submitted my portfolio to my top department majors, i did not get into communication arts. i got into sculpture. the sculpture program at my school is very prestigious. i had one sculpture in my portfolio and it was of a super mario brothers Parana plant. and they let me in their department based off of this image i suppose.
i was very disappointed.
but i went into the major anyway. and i have been in it for 2 years. i have 1 more year to go. i stayed in sculpture because it is a Fine Arts major where communications arts is not..i guess it's just an arts major. there seem to be 3 schools, design, art, and fine art.
i feel you can learn design, but just art, you do on your own regardless and there arent really rules, there is no reason to me to fight to get in a major where i will draw people all day and still lifes and learn to tell a story through a drawing...because i would have explored that anyways. but Fine Art was all new to me.

there are a lot of politics to fine art. it all really is who you know, and if they like your work....sheer talent alone, i dont think gets you too far in the fine art world.

now back to me
so i am in a fine arts major, and i want to be a creative director for a firm or company...that does not add up does it? no.
so why am i in sculpture?
because the fine arts explores the philosophies of art, and being an artist. it is important for me personally to know who i am as an artist, and what i think about art, art history, my art, your art and their art. because if i go into the world not knowing what i think about myself and others how the hell am i going to get anywhere?

being in college for me is to get a degree saying 'yes i make art, yes i am a creative individual, yes i paid an institution and stayed there to get a degree to work for you'
because that's all a business wants. is to know you're qualified to do something....i am qualified to do these things now with out a degree, hell, i've been doing it my whole life. but what i get out of going to college other than that is an experience.
i get to explore my own thoughts in school, for credit to the paper i need. i get to learn others perspectives on art and i get to agree or disagree. i get to fight, or be praised. i get yelled at, i yell at others, i get criticized outcast-ed beat up, and put on a pedestal. i get to learn and fight for what i believe in with no risk of losing my job, or getting kicked out of school. i get to decide my own artistic philosphies. i get to build an artists ego and decide when to listen to teachers or listen to myself to innovate something. i get to challenge everything, and i get to learn and go along with everything.
all the things i am doing in art school is all my decision. and having the freedom to decide things, try things, succeed and fail will help me have confidence! every great artists need to be confident in their choices and work, with out that it's as strong as you feel about it.

i get a lot of shit from my friends for not fighting to be on communication arts like i wanted, and they keep telling me sculpture doesnt fit me...and their right, it doesnt necessarily. but i dont go to com arts because, their curriculum does not allow me the freedom to fight, listen, learn, and decide. it will tell me the formula on how to get a job, and i am not the type of person that fallows a safe formula. i like to change things in my life i do not like, and i will do that at my job. and if i can find the boundaries in school now, then, this is best for me.

being in sculpture for me, is not about learning about sculpture.
its about learning about art and how i feel about it. how art functions in the world and how people react to it, and how the affects me and how i want it to affect others.
now what firm would teach me that? what boss would teach me that?
